CWIM Live Q&A with the Author: “The Happiness Track” Featuring Dr. Emma Seppälä (Hosted by CFA Society Victoria)

New year, new HAPPY you.

Overview

“We don’t have to sacrifice ourselves to be successful. On the contrary, you’ll be more successful if you don’t.” - Emma Seppälä, Ph.D

There’s no better timing than the new year to ditch what is not working and implement a new system that will set you up for success. Ingrained in our culture is the belief that stressful endeavors and a cut-throat mentality are the only ways to get ahead in life and in the workplace. In her book, “The Happiness Track,” Dr. Emma Seppälä uses science to demonstrate that prioritizing your happiness is what will truly give you an edge.

Learn how to conquer the things holding you back in life and get on track to being the you that you want to be.

Key Takeaways:

  • Uncover the secrets to better health, improved emotional intelligence and relationships with other people, and greater happiness.

  • Learn practical strategies for being more resilient to stress, which will allow you to be more creative and innovative.

  • Boost your potential for success by increasing your sense of well-being, redefining productivity, and effectively managing your energy and stamina.

In this LIVE Q&A with the author, you can ask questions for a unique and inspiring discussion that you won’t want to miss!

You are encouraged to invite your colleagues for this complimentary interactive event.

Bonus

As a special treat, Dr. Seppälä will provide a sneak peek of her newest book, available for pre-order now! Sovereign: Reclaim Your Freedom, Energy, and Power in a Time of Distraction, Uncertainty, and Chaos delivers a radical exploration of our self-destructive beliefs and tendencies, to help us live free, happy, and authentic lives.

Sovereign is one of the most influential books I have read in years. It’s loaded with ideas that will recharge your life and change the way you think and act right away. By far the most highlighted book in my library!” - Tom Rath, Bestselling author of Strengthsfinder 2.0

About The Happiness Track: How to Apply the Science of Happiness to Accelerate Your Success

Everyone wants to be happy and successful. And yet the pursuit of both has never been more elusive. As work and personal demands rise, we try to keep up by juggling everything better, moving faster, and doing more. While we might succeed in the short term, it comes at a cost to our well-being, relationships, and, paradoxically, our productivity. In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppälä, the science director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, explains that our inability to achieve sustainable fulfillment is tied to common but outdated notions about success. We are taught that getting ahead means doing everything that’s thrown at us (and then some) with razor-sharp focus and iron discipline; that success depends on our drive and talents; and that achievement cannot happen without stress. The Happiness Track demolishes these counter-productive theories. Drawing on the latest findings from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience—research on happiness, resilience, willpower, compassion, positive stress, creativity, mindfulness—Seppälä shows that finding happiness and fulfillment may, in fact, be the most productive thing we can do to thrive professionally. Filled with practical advice on how to apply these scientific findings to our daily lives, The Happiness Track is a life-changing guide to fast-tracking our success and creating the anxiety-free life we want.

Pre-Order Sovereign: Reclaim Your Freedom, Energy, and Power in a Time of Distraction, Uncertainty, and Chaos

Freedom, Energy, and Power in a Time of Distraction, Uncertainty, and Chaos. Sovereign delivers a radically new and enlightening message made for this age of suffering and confusion. It’s a manifesto that awakens us to all the areas in our lives where we have subjugated ourselves to self-destructive beliefs and tendencies. And it’s a roadmap to reclaim our full psychological sovereignty so we can live free, happy, and authentic lives. Seppälä’s voice is raw and honest, laugh-out-loud funny, and deeply reflective, delving into topics ranging from the nature of self-loathing to the nuances of relationships as she shows us how to unbind ourselves in every area:

  • In our working life and our family life

  • In our physical health and our emotional well-being

  • In our minds, our spirits, and our connection to our very selves

Backed by psychological data, neuroscience, and empirically validated methodologies, Sovereign takes us further along the path of personal transformation than we may ever have ventured before—and gives us the true freedom to live life to our fullest potential.

CWIM Live Q&A with the Authors: “Undiversified: The Big Gender Short in Investment Management,” Featuring Ellen Carr and Katrina Dudley (Hosted by CFA Society Italy)

Diversification is a core principle of investing. Yet money managers have not applied it to their own ranks. Only around 10 percent of portfolio managers—the people most directly responsible for investing your money—are female, and the numbers are even worse at the ownership level. What are the causes of this underrepresentation, and what are its consequences—including for firms’ and clients’ bottom lines?

In Undiversified, experienced practitioners Ellen Carr and Katrina Dudley examine the lack of women in investment management and propose solutions to improve the imbalance. They explore the barriers that subtly but effectively discourage women from entering and staying in the industry at each point in the pipeline. At the entry level, the lack of visible role models discourages students from considering the field, and those who do embark on an investment management career face many obstacles to retention and promotion.

CWIM Live Q&A with the Author: “The Psychology of Money,” Featuring Morgan Housel (Hosted by CFA Society Idaho)

Collaborative WIM in Partnership with Goelzer Investment Management Presents: "The Psychology of Money," featuring columnist, author and economist Morgan Housel

On January 19, we kicked off the 2022 CWIM event calendar with Morgan Housel. For the first time ever, we extended the event by a full 15 minutes (to 90 minutes total) in response to the incredible volume of questions posed to Morgan by attendees! Our Q&A discussion with Morgan ran a full hour, with friends from all over the world asking their questions of Morgan directly, live on camera. Thank you to everyone who participated, and especially to CFA Society of IdahoJim Steele, CFA, CAIA and Melanie Lewis for hosting, and to more than a dozen of our amazing friends who joined the #CWIM team as discussion facilitators. For those who missed it, enjoy the replay!

Overview

Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Money―investing, personal finance, and business decisions―is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.

Speaker

Morgan Housel is a partner at The Collaborative Fund.

His book The Psychology of Money has sold over two million copies and has been translated into 49 languages.

He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, winner of the New York Times Sidney Award, and a two-time finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism. He serves on the board of directors at Markel.

CWIM Live Q&A with the Author: "Reach: A New Strategy to Get Outside of Your Comfort Zone," Featuring Andy Molinsky (Hosted by CFA Society Istanbul for EMEA and CFA Society Edmonton for Americas)

Overview

Is it easy for you to deliver bad news? Do you look forward to speaking in public? Do you enjoy networking? Do you thrill to the idea of throwing out original ideas for criticism? If you answered no to any of these questions, this book can help. What often sets successful people apart is their willingness to do things most of us fear. What’s more, we have the false notion that successful people like to do these things, when the truth is that successful people have simply found their own way to do them. According to Andy Molinsky, an expert on behavior in the business world, there are five key challenges underlying our avoidance tendencies: authenticity, competence, resentment, likability, and morality. This book will help you take the thing you are most afraid of doing and make it a proud part of your personal repertoire. Enjoy the replay of our live conversation with Andy Molinsky!

Speaker

Andy Molinsky is a Professor at Brandeis University’s International Business School, with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology. CWIM Original in Partnership with Schroders: “Women, Money & Power,” Featuring Marilyn Wechter, Moderated by Déla Hoyi (Hosted by CFA Society Oklahoma)

Overview

As you all know, money is a loaded topic for most people- and it is usually more difficult for people to talk about than sex! In this afternoon's discussion, that's just what we are going to be doing - not talking about the allocations or the strategies, but rather, the psychological relationships that we all have with money. We are going to talk about why it's so important to come to terms with, and take responsibility for, not just our finances but also our psychological relationship to our finances and money. Our own histories and feelings about money have a huge impact on how we think about using it and sharing it. Making those feelings conscious can be of enormous value. So, even though professionally, you deal with money and people's issues around it all day, this is going to be a discussion to help you think a bit about your own relationships with money- to try and make the underlying thoughts and feelings a bit less syntonic and more dystonic! And, my hope is, that this will also be a way of thinking that can benefit your clients!

CWIM Live Q&A with the Author: "Think for Yourself," Featuring Vikram Mansharamani (Hosted by CFA Society Ukraine for EMEA and CFA Society Orange County for Americas)

Overview

Have you ever followed your GPS device to a deserted parking lot? Or unquestioningly followed the advice of an expert—perhaps a doctor or financial adviser—only to learn later that your own thoughts and doubts were correct?

As Vikram Mansharamani shows in this eye-opening and perspective-shifting book, our complex, data-flooded world has made us ever more reliant on experts, protocols, and technology. Too often, we've stopped thinking for ourselves.

”Think for Yourself” is an indispensable guide for those looking to restore self-reliant thinking in a data-driven and technology-dependent yet overwhelmingly uncertain world.

Speaker

He is the author of the recently-released THINK FOR YOURSELF: Restoring Common Sense in an Age of Experts and Artificial Intelligence and BOOMBUSTOLOGY: Spotting Financial Bubbles Before They Burst.  He has been a frequent commentator on issues driving disruption in the global business environment. Vikram's ideas and writings have also appeared in Bloomberg, Fortune, Forbes, The New York Times and a long list of other publications. CWIM Original in Partnership with Schroders: “The Myth of Fearlessness: Using Biopsychology to Craft Your Next, Best Steps," Featuring Mary Poffenroth (Hosted by CFA Society Los Angeles)

Overview

Please join us for the next Collaborative WIM Original special quarterly interactive event, hosted by CFA Society Los Angeles. Come prepared to network in breakout sessions with your peers and enjoy an interactive workshop tailored to our industry.
We want to create innovative solutions to our most suffocating struggles, but in order for that to happen, our brains can’t be stuck in survival mode. Feeling stressed and afraid is an arousal state and an over stimulated brain needs systems to get back our sense of wonder and curiosity. When we give our brains a framework to attach to, we feel more in control and ready to move forward, instead of feeling frozen in place. Join biopsychologist Mary Poffenroth as she shares her favorite evidence based frameworks to help you move through everyday fear and build a future full of promising ideas and surprising solutions.

Speaker

Mary Poffenroth is a biopsychologist and in her 14th year as faculty for San Jose State University, the oldest institution of public higher education on the West Coast.

As a native to Silicon Valley, Mary began her research career in astrophysiology at NASA Ames Research Center Moffett Field and now focuses her scholarship and organizational consulting at the scientific intersection of emotional intelligence & innovation. She is the author of Write Present Create: Science Communication for Undergraduates and has taught nearly 20,000 students both in person and online since 2007. A first generation college student herself, she continues to find ways to give back to her community and is currently leading her third cohort of university faculty to success in teaching in the digital space.

Mary holds three masters degrees, one in biology, the other in psychology, and the third in science communication from Imperial College London, with her PhD planned for conferment in 2021. She has spoken at TEDx London, Harvard, and SXSW and her work has been featured in such legacy media outlets as Time magazine, Forbes, Science, Entrepreneur, and National Geographic.

Off stage, she can usually be found alongside her rescue pup bandit, reading a supernatural YA novel, and drinking her weight in fizzy water.
